Merimbula Lake

There’s a quiet stillness to Merimbula Lake that reveals itself over time. The gentle lapping of the changing tide moves softly against the shoreline, creating a rhythm that is constant but never intrusive.

Merimbula Lake is a tranquil study of this environment—an attempt to hold onto that sense of calm and simplicity within the landscape.

For me, the process always begins with finding the right spot. It’s not something that can be forced. I know when I’ve found it because everything begins to fall into place naturally. It feels as though my eyes are framing the view, with each element sitting exactly where it needs to be.

In this work, the use of blue plays a central role in creating depth and distance. The background is kept soft and unstructured, allowing space for the viewer to interpret what lies beyond rather than defining it too clearly.

It’s less about detail and more about suggestion.

The horizon is placed slightly higher, subtly increasing the sense of depth and drawing the viewer further into the scene.

These compositional decisions are quiet, but they shape the overall feeling of the painting.

This is a place removed from distraction—somewhere defined only by natural sound, shifting light, and the movement of water along the shore.

This is my space.

This work is part of an ongoing exploration of coastal and inland waterways across New South Wales.
